1. a foot in modern English verse having one accented syllable followed by two unaccented syllables. Example: “This´is the/ for´est pri/ me´val. The/ mur´mur ing/ pines´ and the/ hem´locks.”
2. a foot in classical verse having three syllables consisting of one long syllable followed by two short syllables. Example: “Ārmăv/ūmqŭe că/nō.”
3. Zoology. a finger or toe.
